NSCF - North Sumatra Coffee Forum
Do you know that NSCF is established in order to participate in providing and promoting the best coffee for you and the world? NSCF is the abreviation of North Sumatra Coffee Forum which is -in Indonesian Language- FKSU as the abreviation of Forum Kopi Sumatera Utara.

In a Coffee Workshop attended by a great number of attendees representing the coffee stakeholders, NSCF (North Sumatra Coffee Forum) was established on 26 October 2010 in Tiara Hotel  Convention Hall in Medan, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The workshop was facilitated by USAID (United States Agency for International Development) through DAI, the contractor of AMARTA-1 Project in Indonesia. We thanked Ms. Bharaty Vighna and Mr. Arman Ginting (both from DAI) for their professional performance in conducting the workshop under supervision of Mr. Erik Meliala.

NSCF is a civil society organization. NSCF makes efforts to promote coffee and to increase sustainability of quantity and quality of coffee through creative coffee value chain, to increase coffee production as well as to increase economic value of coffee in short years to come. NSCF participates in developing of coffee agriculture and entrepreneurship by implementing good agricultural practice, competitive, ecofarming, integrated farming system and sustainable. NSCF strives fot excellent and sustainable coffee. The activities can be in form of promoting, expo, coffee trip/tour, teaching, training, co-worker, facilitating, research, seminar, workshop, consultancy, advocacy, etc. 

The recent main activity of NSCF is to train coffee growers and entrepreneurs in implementing of Ecofriendly Sustainable Coffee Farming and Trading System (Ecoscofas).  The Ecoscofas is the value of NSCF.  The program impacts will be ensuring coffee bean availability with high quality. NSCF will build coffee farmers and entrepreneurs capacity by using TPAR (Training, Planning, Action, Reflection) Cycle which is empirically the most effective method for continuous capacity building.  Participatory Coffee Appraisal (PCA) will be used in deciding what, how, when, where, who.  One of the most important following impact will be that coffee growers and entrepreneurs will put preventive action in the first priority, and curative action in the second priority. 

In order to achieve the overall goal of NSCF, we have decided  the entry point. Our entry point is to eradicate Coffee Berry Borer Hypothenemus hampei or Broca.  Coffee Berry Borer (CBB) is the most destructive pest in the world as well as in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. CBB is small beetle. CBB bores coffee fruits, lives then inside, and eats the coffee bean inside. Because of CBB, coffee bean will not be available any more in short future to come. NSCF has decided the strategy as ollowing. We choose one group of coffee growers  in one village (covered 50-100 ha coffee field) of a subregency in central coffee production to be trained continuously one year long. They will then become change agent in the whole subregency, and later in the whole regency.  We fight the CBB through ecofriendly agronomic  efforts (i.e taking the infected fruit, and then burning it; pruning;  shading trees;  organic fertilizer;  broca trap, fungus Beauvaria bassiana).  Using shade tree will reduce CBB.  Using shade tree  will increase Carbondioxide (CO2) trap.  As you now, most of existing coffee farms here use no shading trees.
       
NSCF wants to train coffee farmers and coffee entrepreneurs in 9 regencies i.e 9 groups, one and other concecutively, depending on budget availability.  Total budget is around US$ 15,100 for one group training a year.  NSCF appreciates if your donation.
